Principal Message

My name is Mathew Needleman and I am humbled and honored to have been selected as the principal of Melrose Elementary School Math Science and Technology Magnet.  I have been a fan of Melrose since I first took a tour of the campus several years ago and I am thrilled to be joining this amazing community of educators, families, and students.

I have been working in education for nearly twenty years and spent the past three years as an Instructional Technology Specialist, guiding one-hundred thirty-six schools across LAUSD to develop and carry out their vision for using technology to enhance learning.  Previously, I served as an instructional coach at three different schools including two science magnets.  As a classroom teacher I was selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator and Google Certified Teacher and won several awards for students’ use of video production to improve student achievement.  I taught educational technology at Antioch University, co-authored a book for school leaders on digital technologies, and created several popular teacher web sites and iPhone and iPad apps.

In addition to ensuring that every child attends school in a safe and supportive learning environment, my goals for Melrose include making sure that students are prepared to meet and exceed Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and that we are able to sustain our 1:1 technology program.

Melrose Math, Science, and Technology Magnet was founded on the idea of providing students with an innovative, relevant, and exciting curriculum.  I promise to continue to help Melrose to stay focused on that goal while it continues to innovate. I am passionate about closing the digital divide and transforming education to meet the demands of the twenty-first century.

I look forward to meeting you and working with you to create a great education for our children.  Please say hello as you see me on campus.  There will also be formal opportunities to meet me including our upcoming Open House on May 19th.  In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact to me if you have any questions or concerns.
