Important Family Updates for the Start of School
Posted 7/27/22

Greetings New and Returning Families,

We are just two and a half weeks away from the start of school and looking forward to welcoming you back for another year of learning and community.  Please note the following answers to frequently asked questions and steps to take for a successful start to the school year.

Thursday, August 4th. 5pm-6pm.  Townhall with Mr. Needleman (just announced!)

Saturday, August 13th.  10am-12pm.  Welcome New Families Event on campus.  New and returning families welcome.

Monday, August 15th. 8am-2:35pm.  First day of school.

Tuesday, August 16th. 8am-1:30pm. Tuesday early dismissal.

All parents should sign up for and link their child(ren) to their parent portal account.  You will need access to this account to remain and equal partner in your child’s learning and receive important information about your child’s progress.  If you did this previously as Melrose or another LAUSD school you don’t need to do it again.

We have been sending automated messages to all families with the information you need to sign up.  As a reminder, each child and each parent has their own PIN number.  Check your SPAM messages if you haven’t recieved those e-mails.  If you need additional assistance or haven’t received the e-mail please call 323-938-6275 between the hours of 8am-2:30pm.

ALL students will receive an iPad or laptop (in fifth grade) from Melrose within the first two weeks of school.  You do NOT need to do anything to request this.  Students who already have a device should bring it with them when school starts.

However, the district is also offering families wi-fi hotspots and chromebooks for home use.  IF you need internet access at home or are requesting a Chromebook please use this link:

ALL families should fill out the lunch application which is linked under forms in the parent portal or use this direct link: (direct link requires your child’s student ID).

There are NO required supplies for the start of school.  However, you may wish to bring a backpack to carry papers and devices.  All students can receive free lunch from the cafeteria.  However, you may wish to send a lunch, water, and/or a snack with them.

At home COVID testing 48 hours before school starts is highly recommended but not required.  At home kits are available for free with health insurance at any pharmacy and Melrose will have kits to give out closer to school starting if you need one.

Indoor mask wearing may or may not be required based on LA County guidance coming later in the week.

New families who missed the live orientation and returning families if you would like a refresher please see the

recording of the parent orientation.

That’s all for now.  We will continue to send updates as we get closer to the start of school.
