4th Grade with Ms. Arato :-)

"Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment."  ~Dr. Maria Montessori

What are the children learning right now?

The best way to discover what your child is learning about is to ask your child.  Your child can show you his/her current learning in the following places, all of which is on their school-issued laptop that goes home:

Reading, Listening, Speaking:  Seesaw app:  Find out the strategies your child is learning to become a better reader.  You'll hear examples of your child using the strategy, and you can also read my explanation of the strategy being used.  Sometimes I officially grade a post and provide comments.  These are good indicators of how your child is doing.

Writing:  Google Classroom:  Once you log into your child's account, you can see the latest book your child is working in.  The books take varying times for the children to complete, based upon the child.  A new book is uploaded about every month.

Math:  Google Classroom:  Once you log into your child's account, you can see the latest math lesson your child completed each day.  Please also read the feedback comments I've posted.  These are good indicators of how your child is doing.

All other subjects:  Seesaw app and/or Google Classroom:  The postings will vary based upon what we're learning about in science, social studies, gardening, music, dance, art, etc.

Homework

Please check your child's folder daily.  There may be papers for your information or for you to sign and return back to school.

  • The suggested reading homework will be the same every day.  It is recommended that your child reads to you for 20-30 minutes daily.  Even though your child is in 4th grade and becoming more independent, reading together is a great bonding opportunity helpful for your child.  You could ask your child questions about the book, such as their favorite part of the book, information about the characters or plot, or asking him/her what certain tricky words mean in the book.  On the laptops, your child can use Kids A-Z (free) or Epic (paid monthly subscription).

  • The suggested math homework will also be the same every day.  It is recommended that your child works on Dreambox for 20-30 minutes.  The program is based on your child's progress.  So, although you may want to help your child complete questions, it's actually more beneficial for your child to complete the problems on his/her own.

Physical Education

Your child will participate in PE daily.  For safety reasons, please make sure your child wears sneakers daily.
