Science and Engineering

Next Generation Science Standards NGSS

Melrose Avenue Elementary is at the forefront of implementing new Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) which incorporate the engineering design process and problem solving.  Science is incorporated into the existing curriculum and taught in the science lab in addition to science STEAM electives that are offered to students including coding and robotics. Through events such as the Star Party and STEAM Saturdays, Melrose expands science instruction beyond the school day.

Building Engineers and Mentors (BEAM) at UCLA is a group of Bruin undergrad and grad students that engage our 5th grade students in engaging activities that promote STEAM initiatives.  This is an after-school program.  See their website for more information about BEAM.  BEAM returns to Melrose in 2015-2016.

Earth. Life. Physical.

The three branches of science-study are built upon the foundation of investigation and inquiry. Melrose students apply the scientific method in gaining knowledge of physical, life, and earth sciences. Scientist students raise questions, observe, analyze, discuss, and share knowledge of their deepening scientific understandings.

Beginning in kindergarten, our scientists maintain science notebooks as a structure for developing and capturing academic growth. Student achievement is also tracked through formal assessments.
