Teaching Tolerance

One of the missions of Melrose is to teach tolerance by bringing diverse populations of students together.  We have zero tolerance for disrespectful, mean, inconsiderate behavior on behalf of students, staff, and parents. 

Bullying Definition

Bullying is any deliberate and unwanted, severe or pervasive physical, verbal or electronic act, conduct or communication committed by a pupil(s) that is repeated, or likely to be repeated and has, or can be reasonably predicted to have the effect of one or more of the following:  1) Reasonable fear or harm to person or property; 2) Substantially detrimental effect on physical or mental health; 3) Substantial interference with academic performance; and 4) Substantial interference with the ability to participate in or benefit from school services, activities, or privileges.  

Although we have low incidences of bullying of Melrose it is important that families work in connection with staff members to ensure the safety and well being of all students.  

Bullying Complaints

Who do you speak to if you have a complaint?

Mr. Needleman and Ms. Bertuccelli are Title IX bullying complaint managers for Melrose.  Appointments can be set up by e-mail or phone.  You can also speak to your child’s teacher but ultimately they will bring the concerns to administration.

What happens when you have a complaint?

After speaking with complaint managers, you may be asked to fill out the Bullying and Hazing Complaint Form.  After you return the form, an investigation will be conducted, and a safety plan will put in place to address the concern if concerns are determined to constitute bullying.  If concerns are not found to meet the impact criteria for bullying, appropriate measures will nevertheless be taken to increase the sensitivity and social skills of parties involved. Although measures taken with other parties are confidential, please stay in contact with staff if you have further complaints.     

At Melrose we work together to ensure a safe environment for all students.

Second Step Curriculum

At Melrose we teach the Second Step social-emotional education curriculum in all classrooms to teach empathy, compassion, and how to deal with anger.  In addition, mindfulness is explored as a way to center feelings and create calm.
