Garden

The Melrose School Community Garden program uses the Garden in its STEAM model for education with three Garden areas:  a Butterfly Garden designed to feature the life cycle of butterflies, A California Native Plane Garden and a Fruit and Vegetable outdoor classroom.

Our Seed to Table science curriculum is in partnership with the Enrich LA Garden Ranger education program and gives every student the opportunity to experience the process of planting seeds, raising edible plans and lastly preparing healthy food. Theses green spaces are used in a multitude of ways to support out STEAM education model. The gardens are a never ending source of inspiration for countless teaching opportunities including creating blogs about gardening, using math to discover the nutritional values in packaged food, understanding the engineering design process, and using plants to create ceramic tiles for nature prints. Each year we have two service events in which our families come together and care for our gardens and the school teaching the value of community service to our students.
